Jordenrunt del 7: Måltider

An imortant part of travelling is eating. I probably ate 400-500 times during my 90 day trip. But don’t worry, I didn’t take photos of all these meals. Often I made my own food in the hostel kitchen and there was no need to take photo of that since it was almost the same food as I make at home. But here comes twenty-three pictures with comments of twenty-three meals and drinks spread out over the three months.

January 2, 9.39 AM

The first breakfast in Latin America. Enchilladas at Hotel Los Girasoles, Cancún. Really tasty. A good gastronomic start of the trip

January 3, 6.58 PM

Cochinita pibil is a famous Mexican dish from the Yucatán region where I spend my first four days of the trip. It is a meat dish with several sour and spicy ingridients. I got several small bowls with extra stuff. Some of them are visable on the picture.

January 5, 7.12 PM

I ate a lof of traditional Mexican food during the days in Mexico. This is Flautas. I had difficulties separating the many different kinds of Mexican food. According to Wikipedia, Flautas is a ”Mexican dish that typically consists of a small rolled-up tortilla that contains filling including beef, cheese or chicken.”. But to me that sounds of a description of most kinds of Mexican dishes. 🙂 I think there might be some regional difference in both names and contents

January 9 2019, 3.57 PM

On the last day in Mexico I wanted to eat something different than the traditional Mexican food. So we went to a restaurant where they served this delicious chicken with rice. A really good meal. It probably makes it on top ten for the whole trip.

January 11, 12.46 pm

I also made a lot of food at my hostel kitchens. Then usually my ordinary pasta, tomatoes and different kinds of sausages. In the beginning I had the idea to write down the prices in the supermarkets and make a comparision between all the countroes. But since I forgot it in one country, I didn’t do it in the rest either. It is all or nothing – it is often like that with me. 🙂

January 14, 1.00 PM

In Villa de Leyva, Colombia, I tried Ajiaco. Traditional chicken soup. It was not bad but too mild. No hot spices.

January 15, 7.03 pm

Hamburger with hot dogs inside in Bogotá. Very unusual for me.

January 19, 11.45 AM

On my second day in Lima I wanted to try something typical Peruan. So I searched on Google map for Peruan food and found this one. It was a lot of food and not that good. But it was not represntative. I ate a lot of delicious food in Peru later on. 🙂

This was the first time I tried Ceviche, the traditional Peruan salad with raw fish. I had just recoverd from a stomach sickness and this very sour dish, delicious as it is, was probbaly not the best thing to start with after not eating proparly for three days. 🙂 Actually this meal was a very nice dinner date with a nice woman, whom ordered the dish in the upper part of the picture.. 🙂

January 28, 7.51 PM

Alpaca burger sounded too interesting not to try. Not as good as one would have hoped but interesting to try new things. The waiter and the owner both seemed very worried when I didn’t finish the burger so I lied to them and said it was delicious. That made them happy again. :-)

A so called ”Extreme Chili Burger” while waiting for the train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes. Bah! It was a delicious burgger but to call it ”extreme chili” will be the text book example on exaggerations from now and onwards.

January 30, 6.58 PM

In Ollantaytambo, in the evening after returning from Macchu Pichu, I went for a pizza. It was proven again that pizzas very a lot between different countries. I took a pizza with Quinoa. I also asked for aji on the side. Aji is a traditional spicy sauce. In Peru it is usually orange. In some other Latin American countries I believe it is green.

February 10, 8.14 PM

The Argentine beef are world fanous are said to be the best in the world. Well…maybe I had just bad luck and went to the wrong places but I have eaten much better meat many times.

February 11, 6.22 PM

Meat Milanesa first day in Uruguay. Tasty but mild. They didn’t have any hot spicies to add unfortunately. Still good.

March 1, 3.32 PM

This dish doesn’t look any special but it was one of the top three meals during the trip. The fish on Easter Island was really good. If the moais (famous statues) didn’t exist one could almost go there just to eat.

March 1, 4.38 PM

The first day at Easter Island I was very tired since I had woken up 0300 to catch the flight from Santiago. So I relaxed and drank tea. This tea pot was really nice and I actually considered asking the manager if I could buy it. But I didn’t want to carry it in my luggage for the last month of travelling. 🙂 Often you only get a cup of tea. Here you could get a whole pot. Good.

March 11, 08.32 AM

Probbaly the best breakfast I had during the trip. Yummy. 🙂

March 14, 10.45 am

Before going to the Maori village Whakarewarewa I had to stop for lunch. I have never seen sushi pieces this big before. The lunch alos consisted of meat and rice but I only took photo of the giant sushi pieces. 🙂

March 15, 6.33 PM

Indian food is my favorit food but in Latin America I didn’t see much of it. In New Zealand it was everywhere. I normally chose other dishes than Tikka Masala but for this dinner I made an exception. It was during this Wellington dinner I heard about the terror attack in Christchurch, which was to be my next destination. It happened several hours earlier but I hadn’t read any news.

March 25, 5.07 PM

A Galette place found near one of Sydney’s harbour (Circle Quay). Galette is a name for crèpes with food filling instead of sweet filling. The type of flour might also vary.

March 25, 9.06 PM

Grapefruit tea in a Chinese café/fast food restaurant in Sydney’s China town. I was looking for a café with late opening hours to sit and use my lap top for some working, but Sydney closes early. This was my solution. It was tasty but I believe I would quickly get tired of the taste.

March 27, 4.03 PM

This Indonesian dish was called nasi…something. Not nasi goreng which is perhaps the most famous Indonesian dish. It was some other nasi… It might have been nasi padang.

March 28, 11.07 PM

I had skipped breakfast this day so this nice, but probably not very healyhy, brunch suited me perfectly.

About me and this site

On this site I gather some of my older articles from Stockholm News, a news site I was running between 2007 and 2013. These articles are often more explanatory analyses, written for non-Swedish readers. I also post blog posts under ’My opinion’. The themes vary from politics to sports and travel. The language is both Swedish and English.
